Penny and Jack's love story started in Penny's car, of all places. Although the duo went to the same school, it wasn't until they worked together a few years later that they got to know each other. “Jack didn't drive and we were having a drink after work one night when he realised that we lived minutes apart, so he cheekily asked if I'd pick him up on my way into the office,” says Penny. It was during the first journey together that they realised how much they had in common. “I was listening to Oasis in the car and found out they were also Jack's favourite band, so that got us talking,” she says.
Their daily drive to work brought them together and they'd soon planned their first date – a movie night at Penny's parents'. “We never stopped talking, it was perfect, but I was reluctant to fall for him because I was moving to Manchester to do my Masters degree,” she says. Jack wasn't letting that get in the way, and after numerous train journeys to visit Penny, he decided to propose. “We went on a Mediterranean cruise with my parents over my birthday, and Jack had told me not to expect much as a present,” she remembers. “He woke me up, gave me a small gift and then presented the ring.
After saying yes, I told him off because he hadn't put the ring on my finger but then realised my hand was clamped around the box, so he couldn't even get to it,” she says. Their wedding took a year to organise and here Penny tells us more about the big day…
Our five bridesmaids looked beautiful and they were really comfortable, which was important to me.
I had my hair loosely curled and pinned into a natural looking bun. It was perfect and even looked great later in the day when parts started to become unpinned.
Jack's always said my eyes are his favourite feature, so to make them stand out, I opted for individual false lashes, and the pink shade on my lips made my face light up.
As soon as we got home from the cruise, we visited The Priory and fell in love with its stunning grounds.
I was unsure about my dress to start with but when I walked out and saw my mum's face and then looked in the mirror, I knew it was the one.
“Our day was so personal to us; we loved every minute.” – Penny
As a surprise, my dad had organised a personalised runner for the aisle with the words, 'Of all the journeys I have walked in life, this is the best. Love, Dad.' It was lovely and had everyone in tears.
It was lovely to have time with my dad in the car. I was worried that I'd be a blubbery mess but we chatted through the whole journey and it really calmed me down.
Jack never has to wear a suit and was unsure about what he would look like, but once he tried it on, he looked great.
