How to save on wedding photography without compromising on quality, according to photographer Tim Payne

Your wedding photos are lasting usually plenty, unless you have keepsakes, so it’s worth investing in multiple venues or a large a photographer you trust. But beautiful guest list. images don’t have to break the bank. We spoke with photographer Tim Payne about making your money go further. 

Tim's top tips
“When it comes to wedding photography, don’t be tempted by rock-bottom prices. If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. To keep costs down, consider going digital-only. You can order prints and albums later. Another option is booking your big day during off-peak times like midweek or winter weddings.

“Be strategic about coverage. A half- day package could be all you need if you focus on the moments that matter most. Keep in mind that one photographer is 

“Ensure you meet your photographer before booking. Ask to see full galleries from recent weddings, not just a polished website portfolio. Check delivery timelines in advance to avoid waiting months for your photos to arrive. Ask about hybrid packages, as some suppliers offer short video highlights too. 

“Always clarify any additional costs, such as travel expenses, overtime, or late finishes, so there are no surprise costs. 

“On the day itself, share a short list of must-have shots to keep things focused and efficient. Plan group photos in advance to save valuable time. If you’re working with a tighter budget, consider photography students or assistants. Many are highly skilled and charge less while building their portfolios."
